Half Time Protocol

A player led half time that gets you out warm, clear, and focused for the restart.

15:00
Fifteen minutes. Use every one of them with a purpose.
Phase One

Arrive and Recover

The body first. Recover before anyone is asked to think or talk.

Sit and Breathe

Sit down, no standing or pacing. Water and fuel on straight away. Let the heart rate come down.

Quiet First

No talking for the first minute. Nothing of value is said in the opening seconds of a break. Let the body settle before the mind is asked anything.

Treatment to the Side

Anyone who needs treatment goes to the side, away from the group, so the rest of the panel is not distracted.

Keep the Room Quiet

Only the voices that need to speak, speak. A crowded, noisy dressing room helps no one.

Phase Two

Players Talk in Units

Player led. The read on the game comes from the players first.

Split into Units

Backs together in one group, forwards together in the other. Goalkeepers and midfielders float between the two, or join wherever they are needed.

Talk Out Loud

Each group works through the two questions out loud. One voice at a time, and every player has a say.

The Two Questions
1

What is going well that we need to keep up?

2

What is our biggest concern right now, and how do we fix it?

Phase Three

Bring It Together

The whole group, then management. Agree the few things that matter.

Groups Share

Each group shares what they talked about with the whole room. The concerns and the fixes come from the players.

Management Have Their Say

Management give their thoughts and agree any changes. Keep it to the two or three things that actually matter.

One Voice, Clear Message

One voice at a time. Clear, simple messages. If a message is for one player, take him aside. Thirty seconds direct beats five minutes aimed at the group.

Phase Four

Final Word and Out

The players close it, and we get out warm.

Final Word to the Players

The last word is left with the players, not the coaches. It is their game.

Get Out Early

Get onto the field early. Do not wait to be called out.

Move and Stay Warm

Keep moving so the body does not cool down. Sitting still costs us the start of the second half.

Own the Field First

Take a minute together to focus out on the pitch before the opposition arrives. We do not walk out cold to the ball being thrown in.

Pick your duration, start the clock, and move through the four phases. Print for a clean sideline sheet.
