B.A.R Recap

The last session before the match. Lock in the non negotiables and the shape, so nothing is fuzzy at throw in.

The Method

How To Run It

  1. 1

The Before Action Review, a week out, set our intentions and our lessons. The Recap is where we lock them in.

  2. 2

Run it in the last session before the match. Keep it sharp and short. This is not the session to introduce anything new.

  3. 3

Go through our restart scenarios and our shape. For each one, be clear on the setup, the runs, and the non negotiables, the things that do not change no matter what.

  4. 4

Every player leaves knowing their job in every scenario.

The Recap is not the place for new ideas. It is the place to make the plan certain.

Part One

Our Puck Out

Recap every restart option we use and the non negotiables for each, so there is no hesitation on the ball.

Our Options

+

What are our options, and when do we use each?

  • What is our default from open play, and what do we go to after a free?
  • What is our fall back when nothing fast is on?
  • Does every player know which option is which, and who calls it?

The Runs

+

Who runs, and how?

  • Who are the runners in each option, and what run do they make?
  • How do our runs create the space we want?
  • When does the best space tend to open up?

Non Negotiables

+

What does not change, whatever happens?

  • What are the standards that hold in every option, whatever the opposition?
  • What do we do the moment we win it, and the moment we lose it?
  • What is the one thing every player must get right here?

Part Two

Defending Their Puck Out

Recap how we set up against their restart, and the non negotiables that turn it over.

Our Setup

+

What is our shape when they have the restart?

  • Do we press, split, or sit, and where does each line set up?
  • Who picks up whom, and how does that change for this opposition?

Short and Long

+

What do we do if they go short, and if they go long?

  • How do we react if they take a short one?
  • How do we react if they go long, and who gets back?

Non Negotiables

+

What holds no matter what?

  • What is each player responsible for on their own man?
  • How do we deal with a runner who goes out the field?
  • What do we do if they bunch a line?

Part Three

Structure and Shape

Recap how we hold our shape when the ball is in play, at the back and up front.

At the Back

+

How do we hold up at the back?

  • How many do we keep back, and do we play a spare man?
  • When does a wing back tuck across, and who picks up the key opposition man?

Up Front

+

How do we hold up front?

  • How do the wing forwards work, and how quickly do they get their shape back?
  • What do we want from our centre forward?
  • Do we keep an anchor inside as an out ball?

Non Negotiables

+

What does not drop?

  • What shape do we never give up, whatever the score?
  • How do we make sure cover is always there when someone steps out?
  • When must everyone be back in their shape?
